The Richland County Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to place a 0.25 percent sales tax increase on the November general election ballot.

The commissioners agreed it's important for the voters to decide whether or not to approve the tax hike.

The sales tax increase is expected to generate $2.5 million for the general fund the first year and $3.5 million the second year.

Commissioner Ed Olson said some spending that involves law enforcement, 911 service and safety issues have higher priority.

If the voters approve the sales tax in the fall, it would be effective for four years.
