MANSFIELD  ~ John R. “Pap Pap” Storkel, 82, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Winchester Terrace Nursing Home.

Born on Feb 19, 1928 in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of Marie and John Storkel.  He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.  He received the Korean service medal as well as the United Nations service medal.

After an honorable discharge from the military, John attended the Philadelphia Bible Institute where he studied Bible and Music.          John was a very active member of his church and served in various ministries including teaching, the office of deacon, and the bus ministry.  His passion though was singing and playing his trumpet for the Lord.

During his younger years, he developed and managed a summer resort in New Jersey called Sunnybrook Acres.  In his later years he owned a limousine service (Class Limo) serving the Greater New York and New Jersey areas.

John was a sensitive man, fully devoted to God and his family.  He loved listening to and singing hymns, watching old movies, rooting for the NY Yankees, cuddling with his dog Snickers, and making people laugh.

He is survived by three sons, Victor (Gail) Storkel of Des Moines, IA, Steven (Becky) Storkel of Mansfield, Bradley (Ladonna) Storkel of Boise, ID, nine grandchildren, Crystal, Collette, James (Erika), Jennifer, Brittany, Sarah, Adam, Megan, and Robert Storkel, and a great grandchild, Xander.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, July 29, at 11 a.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home.  Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.  A luncheon will follow at Berean Baptist Church and burial, with military honors, will follow the reception at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Berean Baptist Church Haiti Relief Fund.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Storkel family, and private condolences to them may be made online at: http://www.snyderfuneralhomes.com
